The year 1959 marks the 26th anniversary of Ma's and Pa's Place, US 91 (Salt Lake-Ogden Highway) Roy, Utah. Under the same management - Verdi L. Pingree and Wife. Starting with a kitchen 12x14 and serving under an old time bowery with a seating capacity of thirty, Dorthea, Maxine, Lucile, Joyce, Wallace, Carl, and James (Ma's and Pa's family) all shared the work. We now have four spacious dining rooms, seating from 75 to 300 people and a coffee shop, seating 60. The dining rooms upstairs are the beautiful Hawaiian Room with murals of Hawaii, and the Parisian Room with murals of Paris. The Anniversary Room with king-size reproduction of Gainsborough's Blue Boy and Pinky, by Sir Thomas Lawrence, painted by our son Carl L. Pingree, and our beautifull large dining room with his oil paintings, which are for sale, and the large flagstone fireplace, stones (gathered from eight different quarries) which are 1/2 inch square to 6 inches by 3 feet long, showing all colors found in the Grand Canyon. Now Wallace, Carl and James are the chefs and pride themselves on the cleanliness and homey atmosphere of the place. Ma playing Solo Vox and piano for dinner music and jovial Pa overlooking it all, makes this place a memory that will stay with you

The square on black line is one end of the measured race course. Electric eyes, one setting far out on salt and one close up. There are two race courses of 13 miles each, one circular and one strait-a way. First tried out in 1912, became world famous 1931, when Ab Jenkins with his Mormon Meteor broke all previous world's speed records. Since, others from all over the world have made new records with automobiles, stockcars, hot-rods, motor-cycles, etc. The famous Pilot Peak in the back ground was used as a guide for crossing this Great Salt Deseret by the Donner Party in 1846 - later by other California gold seekers. Their broken down hand-carts, wagons and wheel tracks are still visible on certain parts of this barren desert

The Bonneville Salt Flats are the South-Western fringe of the Great Salt lake. When water covers it in the winter and spring, it becomes soggy and unfit for racing; drying out rapidly it becomes very hard and rigid, supporting great weight. It is 40 miles across this great Salt Desert from east to west, Knolls Utah, to Wendover. The Western Pacific R.R. and high-way 40-50 run parallel over this huge expanse, with the exception of one slight offset curve the high-way is straight as an arrow. Thousands of tourists stop every year to exaine and gather some of the salt along the road-side; many staying over at Wendover during the racing periods, driving over to the course to watch the runs being made Curt Teich & Co

It was finished Nov, 13, 1903 after 1 1/2 years of effort at a cost of $4,500,000,00. It saves for the S. P. R. Co. 43.8 miles of distance, 3,919 degrees of curvature and 1,515 feet of grade. The water in the lake is 22 per cent salt, Thousands of tons of salt are shipped form this source annually.
