Vasques, built the Fort for protection from the Indians. This was the home of Col. Francisco until his death forty years later in 1902. It is operated as a museum by the Huerfano County Historical Society.

The town of Cotopaxi was named for the world's highest active volcano, 19,498 feet. Mt. Cotopaxi, in Ecuador. Mt. Cotopaxi, near the Equator, is just a few miles from the only place in the world where the latitude and the temperature both read 0 degrees. It was given this unusual name by a Portuguese immigrant, Emanual H. Saltiel who developed the Cotopaxi mine around 1877. Mr. Saltiel had mined in Ecuador and the mountain peak visible from here resembled the snow-packed volcano in Ecuador.
