Rescuing a Torpedo After Practice by USS Utah
Divided Back unused

Description:
Jackies from the US SS Utah recovering a spent torpedo after target practice. A torpedo is like a small, independent subamrine. It is 21 feet long, 21 inches in diameter, and is divided into six compartments. The first or front compartment contains damp gun cotton and detonator which explodes the torpedo when it comes into contact with anything solid, as a ship's side. Second, compressed air tank containing 1,350 pounds of air to drive the propellers. Third, balance compartment from which project horizontal planes. Fourth, engine compartment containing turbie type motor driven by compressed air. Fifth, bouyancy compartment, holding enough air to keep torpedo from sinking and make it easily propelled. Sixth, gyroscope compartment to insure its continuance on the course aimed. The torpedo also has horizontal and perpendicular rudders which may be set at any angle, and strong twin propellers

Two Batteries of 14-inch Guns and Turret Crews
Divided Back unused

Description:
They seem to be out for dress parade - these boys in their spotless white, but that isn't the limit to their range of activity - not by a long, long shot! Our gunners have earned the reputation of being the finest marksmen in the world. One of these turret crews, on the dreadnaught Texas, recently made 48 hits out of a possible 59, and another crew on the battleship Florida fired 58 shots from their 12-inch gun, and 54 of them were hits. Do you wonder that we say without fear of contradiction, that other navies willingly admit that we have in our United States Navy the greatest gunners in the world?
