| A flotilla welcomes the U.S.S. ALABAMA as she prepares to stop at McDuffie Island for ceremonies. The battleship, nicknamed the "Lucky A," saw action in World War II for 28 months, primarily in the Pacific. It carried 2400 to 3200 men and was involved in campaigns in Guam, Gilbert Islands, Mariannas, Okinawa, and the Philippine Sea. The U.S.S. Alabama joined the Missouri while Gen. MacArthur signed the Peace Treaty and subsequently served as a carrier to bring men home. |
