A Monster Tree Stump
Title:
A Monster Tree Stump
Divided Back unused

Description:
In the accompanying picture, seventeen men may be seen standing upon the ragged and splintered stump of a tree, and by no means occupying all the space. On the Pacific coast, these monster tree stumps are often put to odd uses. At one point, in California dances are frequently held with a huge tree stump as a dancing floor, and there are a number of instances in which the stump of one of the big trees has been made to serve as the foundation of a fair-sized house.

Divided Back PM 1910 Aug-28

Description:
The giant trees of the Pacific coast of the United States constitute one of the world's greatest natural curiosities. They occur in the states of Oregon, Washington and California. Many of the forest monarchs are from 300 to 400 feet high and from 70 to 90 feet in circumference, while one recently discovered measured 109 feet around the trunk at the base. Some of these trees have no branches nearer the ground than 100 feet, and many of the branches are fully 6 feet in diameter.

I think that I shall never see A poem lovely as a tree. A tree whose hungry mouth is prest Against the Earth's sweet flowing breast. A tree that looks at God all day And lifts her leafy arms to pray. A tree that may in summer wear A nest of robins in her hair. Upon whose bosom snow has lain: Who intimately lives with rain. Poems are made by fools like me, But only God can make a tree. Joyce Kilmer, author of this immortal poem, was born in New Brunswick, N. J., December 6, 1886. The Joyce Kilmer forest, in Western North Carolina, is preserved as an everlasting tribute to him. A soldier in the World war. he was killed in action in France, June 30, 1918.

Legend of the Dogwood
Title:
Legend of the Dogwood
Linen unused

Description:
An old and beautiful legend has it that, at the time of the Crucifixion, the dogwood was comparable in size to the oak tree and other monarchs of the forest. Because of its firmness and strength it was selected as the timber for the cross, but to be put to such a cruel use greatly distressed the tree. Sensing this, the Crucified Jesus in his gentle pity for the sorrow and suffering of all said to it, "Because your sorrow and pit for My sufferings never again will the dogwood tree grow large enough to be used as a gibbet. Henceforth it will be slender, bent and twisted and its blossoms will be in the form of a cross - two long and two short petals. In the center of the outer edge of each petal there will be nailprints - brown with rust and stained with red - and in the center of the flower will be a crown of thorns, and all who see this will remember

Gaint Banyan Tree in Tropical Florida
Title:
Gaint Banyan Tree in Tropical Florida
Linen PM 1950

Description:
The banyan is one of Florida's most curious trees, which sprouts even from a seed dropped on the limb of any other tree by birds. The roots descend to the soil and in time kill the tree on which they grow. Then as the branches develop, these throw down supports which take root as soon as they touch the ground, enlarge into trunks and extend branches in their turn to all sides of the parent tree. Some of these trees grow to very large proportions
