In 1835 the General founded the town of Sonoma, and on June 14, 1846, American settlers raised the Bear Flag in Sonoma Plaza proclaiming California a republic. Besides the original frame residence, there is a Swiss chalet which houses Vallejo relics, and surrounding gardens are filled with lovely flowers, magnolia, olive and citrus trees.
