Aunt Polly is amazed and lets Tom go to play, thinking he has done all the painting. The episode, as written by Mark Twain, has become the most famous in a boy's book in any language. The Post Office has commemorated it in a stamp issued October 13, 1972. Norman Rockwell, the great artist-illustrator, painted the original.
