George Ferris' greatest engineering accomplishment was the Ferris Wheel at Chicago's World Columbian Exposition in 1893. Two hundred and sixty four feet tall, each of the giant wheel's 36 cars carried 60 passengers. Before the Exposition closed, nearly a million and a half people paid 50 cents for a twenty minute ride. And since then, amusement wheels worldwide that carry people up, over the top, and down, have been called Ferris wheels

The White Star Liner Titanic. On April 2nd, 1912, delayed one day beacause of high winds, the new RMS Titanic steamed out of the Harland and Wolff yards for her trials for the British Boardof Trade. Reported to have reached a speed of 24 knots, the lightly loaded Titanic passed her trials with ease. Later that day, she headed for Southampton, England to ready for her maiden voyage to start at noon, April 10, 1912. The Titanic, thelargest linerin her day was 882 3/4 feet long, 92 1/2 feet wide and over 46, 328 gross tons in weight
