New Salem Lodge is located at the entrance to New Salem State Park. It is completely encompassed by a heavily wooded area. The exterior of New Salem Lodge is unique, in-as-much as it has been built in the same character as all of the buildings in the reconstructed village of New Salem. While the Lodge may be rustic and rugged in character the accommodations here are of the best. John D. Freeman The old wagon was made in 1821 by the father of General George A. Custer, the great Indian fighter who was killed in the Custer Massacre in 1876. This wagon was used quite a few times by the Custer family in crossing the continent. The ox-driven wagon is now at Lincoln's New Salem State Park, located near Petersburg on Highway 97 & 123.
