Coloma California (CA), Chrome unused

Description:
It was on Jan. 24, 1848 that James Marshall, while turning off the water to Sutter's sawmill, happened to notice gold flakes in the mill race. The news leaked out and soon miners swarmed over the countryside. On April 25, 1851 Coloma became the county seat of El Dorado County, only to lose it to Hangtown (Placerville) in 1857. Jules Francois Bekeart, who first came to Coloma on April 10, 1849, built a little brick store in 1851. The building bricks came from a yard in Sacramento, Jim Marshall, who was doing odd jobs, made the counters for the Bekeart store...M.P Dexter Press, Inc

Description:
Merle Porter On January 24, 1848, James Marshall discovered flakes of gold while turning off the water to Sutter's Sawmill. While this was not the first gold to be discovered in California, it was the find that started the 1849 gold rush to the west. In a short time gold was found all along the west side of the Sierra Nevada Range, called "The Mother Lode." The present highway, 49, follows the old gold trail where one may see a great number of the ghost towns of the past. Today fruit orchards grow along the highway. The lack of fruit and vegetables in the miners' diet gave them scurvy. Potatoes sold for $1.00 each, bread $1.00 per slice and coffee was made from beans crushed in a sack over a stone Dexter

Old School House

Description:
Marie Porter This little red school house stands at the head of the main street of Coloma. It was first built in Slateington (Now Kelsy) in 1895. When the Coloma school burned in 1922 the building was hauled down the narrow crooked road by wagon teams. One of the best known teachers in the school was Edwin Markham, author of the poem, "Man With a Hoe." Coloma had its start when James Marshall discovered gold on the American River on Jan. 24, 1848. Marshall's discovery won him only hard luck. He died on Aug. 10, 1885 in poverty. Little is left of Coloma that the miners knew a short hundred years ago. The town has become a state park
