Emily is participating in the Santa Lucia Festival which is on December 13. The Swedish tradition features the oldest daughter rising early in the morning, donning a white robe and crimson sash. Emily is bringing ginger cookies and coffee to the members of the household. The tradition is from the legend of Lucia of Sicily (Italy) who was martyred for her Christian faith. Centuries later she brought food to Sweden during a famine. The name Lucia is Latin for light

Originating in the Province of Dalarna, Sweden, in the early 1700s, this stubby creature is now the adopted symbol of Linsborg, Kansas. Traditionally orange-red, it also appears in many other colors with varying saddle patterns and phrasing. Most families here mark their homes with such signs, a custom generic to this community. Description:
A gaudy Main Street movie house for nearly fifty years, it now displays twice life-size Swedish figures in the garb of early Provincial farmers. Such clothing, characterized by candy-striped skirts and aprons for women and chamois breeches for men, is still worn in the homeland today on certain church holidays, to weddings, and special family and community gatherings. Bethany College art students Tim Leaf and Ron Wilson were commissioned by the Smoky Valley Development Assn. to redecorate the upper facade and portray their interpretation of traditional costuming, accented by Kurbitsblommor foillage. Completed on Aug. 16, 1981, this mural uniquely compliments the Art Decco tilework of the original entrance and lobby, and is the focal highlight of the town's colorful shopping area
