When the British occupied Richmond during the Revolution, the Virginia legislature fled to Charlottesville and then upon the approach of Tarleton to Staunten. From June 7 to 23, 1781, the legislative sessions were held in the original Trinity of which the present church is a part, which stood on the site of the beautiful vineclad edifice and was the first house of worship in Staunton. Among the Assemblymen who met here were Patrick Henry, Richard Henry Lee and other notables. On June 19th the legislature here elected Gen. Thomas Nelson Governor of Virginia, to succeed the immortal Jefferson

In 1781, the Assembly was pursued by Tarleton and the British from Richmond to Charlottesville and then to Staunton. After meeting three days, word suddenly arrived that the British were coming. So abruptly did the Assembly leave, that tradition has it Patrick Henry took to horse wearing only one boot.
