Description:
Located 37 miles north of Fort Worth and 42 miles northwest of Dallas, County seat of Denton County, was named after John B. Denton, a lawyer-and ranger captain, who was killed by the Indians in 1841. His remains now rest beneath the southeast corner of the courthouse lawn. The county seat was moved here in 1857 and the city received its first charter in 1866. E. C. Kropp Co.

The Denton County Courthouse

Description:
Completed in 1887, this structure was the fifth in the history of the county. One earlier courthouse was burned by a member of the Sam Bass Gang and two others were struck by lightning. The walls are of native limestone, columns of Bernet County, Texas marble. The photo was taken from atop the First State Bank. Denton County was named for John B. Denton, who as a Methodist Circuit Rider came to Texas in 1836 from Tennessee
