The Smith's interest in the history of the college, recognition of higher education, and their love and gratitude for their parents are demonstrated through the establishment of this focal point for the campus entrance. The Museum of Nebraska Art, formerly the Kearney post office, was designed by James Knox Taylor of Washington, DC. Opened September 1911, it was a model office building of the period and was one of the first and best fireproof steel frame structures. The Classic Design exterior is of New Hampshire granite and Bedford sandstone. The interior is rich in bronze details. The lobby floor is terrazzo fo white and sienna marble in cement with a pattern of blocks of Tennessee marble interspersed. The Renaissance Revival ediface monument staircases on the west and south facades are embraced by Doric columns. It was officially listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. Located at 2401 Central Avenue, the museum was opened in October 1986, to provide a home for the Nebraska Art Collection, which contains over 4000 pieces created by some 300 artists. The collection was created in 1976 to conserve, collect and record the great cultural works that are the heritage of Nebraska
