During the winter months when the Straits of Mackinac are frozen over, there are several methods used; dog sled, and often motor driven sleds, but most usually an airplane equipped with skis. Sometimes operating from Mackinaw City and sometimes from St. Ignace, the plane carries mail and supplies as well as passengers. The plane takes off and lands on the ice.

Highest point on the island 325 feet above the Straits and 168 feet above Fort Mackinac. Built by the British soon after the capture of Fort Mackinac, July 17, 1812. British named it Fort George, after reigning English King George III, renamed by the Americans Fort Holms, after Major Andrew Hunter Holmes, who was killed in the Battle of Mackinac Island, August 4, 1814, in an attempt to take the fort from the British. The block house, central feature of the fort was destroyed by the Americans after the war, but was later restored and was destroyed by fire in 1833. Restored to its original form by the Mackinac Island State Park Commission, 1936

Closely connected with the Mission House. Early in the last Century the Connecticut Missionary Society sent Rev. Wm. M. Ferry, a Presbyterian minister here, who in 1823 established a mission school for Indian children. The Mission House was built in 1825 and the church building was completed in 1830. Church and school flourished for only a short time and was abandoned and closed in 1837. In 1895 the property was acquired by certain visitors and residents and opened as the Union Chapel

Highest point on the island 325 feet above the Straits and 168 feet above Fort Mackinac. Build by the British soon after the capture of Fort Mackinac, July 17, 1812. British named it Fort George, after the reigning English King George III, renamed by the Americans fort Holmes, after Major Andrew Hunter Holmes, who was killed in the battle of Mackinac Island, August 4, 1814, in an attempt to take the fort from the British. The block house, central feature of the fort was destroyed by the Americans after the war, but was later restored and was destroyed by fire in 1933. Restored to its original form by the Mackinac Island State Park commission, 1936.

Description:
Highest point on the island 325 feet above the Straits and 168 feet above Fort Mackinac. Built by the British soon after the capture of Fort Mackinac, July 17, 1812. British named it Fort George, after the reigning English King George III, renamed by the Americans Fort Holmes, after Major Andrew Hunter Holmes, who was killed in the battle of Mackinac Island, August 4, 1814, in an attempt to take the fort from the British. The block house, central feature of the fort was destroyed by the Americans after the war, but was later restored and was destroyed by fire in 1933. Restored to its original form by the Mackinac Island State Park Commission, 1936.

Description:
The most famous of the many natural scenes found here. Arch Rock, located on the east side of the Island, is the most famous of natural curiosities. It is a limestone arch whose summit towers 149 feet above the lake. The height from base of buttress to top of rock is 49 feet. It is said that Captain Marryat came here after the war of 1812 to try his sea legs and dance a hornpipe on the crest of Arch Rock.
