This spot is one of the few where hand to hand fighting actually occurred, and no pen or tongue can portray the bitter fight on this hill on July 3d, 1863, nor depict with any degree of accuracy the horrible result after the battle, when Lee retreated across the Potomac.

This wild, weird spot consists of a most wonderful aggregation of massive rocks, rent with chasms and riddled with bullet marks. George G. Meade was born in 1815. He graduated from West Point in 1835, and was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Army of the Potomac in 1863. During the battle of Gettysburg, his headquarters was an humble dwelling standingon Taneytown Road and riddled by shot and shell. After his great victory, Meade was made Brigadier-General, and in 1864, Major-General. He died in 1872.

At the battle of Gettysburg, the Union line was broken at the "copse of trees," which was unquestionably the "high water mark" of the Civil War, for the tide had indeed turned; the incident is recorded upon the open pages of an immense bronze volume. It was here that Armistead and Cushing died side by side, in the thicket of the fight, and in a hand to hand combat.

Gouverneur Kemble Warren was born at Cold Spring, NY, Jan. 8th, 1830. In 1863 he was appointed Chief Engineer of the Army of the Potomac in Hooker's staff, and held Little Round Top during a fierce assault in the battle of Gettysburg, July 1863. In 1865 he was made Major-General in the regular army, and died in 1882.
