Powered by 900 horsepower, 12-cylinder v-type diesel engine, which in crossing the continent in October, 1934, broke every existing world's record for fully equipped railroad trains. Established mark of 120 miles per hour; set new average of 84 miles per hour for distances over 500 miles; lowered the record running time Los Angeles to Chicago to 38 hours and 50 minutes, and from Los Angeles to New York to 56 hours 55 minutes. Union Pacific streamline trains are built of aluminum, about one-third the weight of steel, are completely air-conditioned, and represent the last word in modern travel comfort.
