Hillsboro-Home of Franklin Pierce. Frankli. erce,
fourteenth President of the United States, was born at
Husboro, N.H., on Nov. 23d, 1804. He was graduated
from Bowdoin College in 1824, and in 1 4, married Jane
Means Appleton. They both preferred the quiet of their
New England home to the fashionable life at Washington,
and were glad when they could return to Hillsboro at the
expiration of Pierce's term of office in 1857. Later they
moved to Concord, where they passed the remainder of
their days in comfort and ease. Pierce died on Oct. 8th,
1869, six years after the death of his wife.
