This mining camp in the Rand Quadrangle was named for the Rand gold-mining district in the Transvaal, South Africa. Gold was first discovered in Goler Wash nine miles northwest of the town, in 1893. soon dry wash camps sprung up with the richest mine, Yellow Aster producing over $10,000,000 in gold by 1925. Other nearby towns of Johannesburg, named for the chief city of Transvaal, Atolia, and Red Mountain complete the Rand Mountain camps
