The Hermitage
Ho-Ho-Kus New Jersey (NJ), Linen unused

Description:
In this house which was built long before the Revolution, Aaron Burr met Madame Provost, and here they were married in 1782. During the year 1779 on nights when he could safely absent himself from the lines, Colonel Burr would leave headquarters at White Plains and attended by trusted men would ride across country to Tarrytown where his boat was hidden. His horse was hobbled and thrown in the bottom of the boat and with muffled oars they rowed across the silent Hudson. On the Jersey side his horse was released and he began his lonely ride through the historic county of Bergen. In a short time Colonel Burr was at the Hermitage where he passed many a happy hour with his fiancee. A traveller stopping at the Hermitage Tea Room, may enjoy the charming interior of this historic home, while being served.
