Description:
Hwy. 3, 6 miles NW of St. Maries, on the shadowy St. Joe River. A primitive log cabin mission, long since gone, was built by the Coeur d'Alene Indians, supervised by the black-robed missionaries. Two-thirds of the tribe were baptized and agriculture was begun. Floods gave trouble however and in 1846 the mission moved to Cataldo. Note the attractive historical market, one of nearly 200 erected by Idaho Hwy. Dept

Description:
Series 146616 Located Along The Shadowy St. Joe River, at the Junction of Alt. 95 and Hwy. 5, this city of 2500 pop, is in the heart of outdoor recreation at its best. It combines the Lake Coeur d' Alene Country to the northwest and the huge St. Joe National Forest to the east with the smooth, navigable river in between. Logging and lumbering are the principal industries. St. Maries is the County Seat of Benewah County.
