Description:
"The King of the Organ" Born at Eisenach, Prussia. His father and forefathers for five generations were musician; studied violin, clavichord, organ; in 1708 he was made court-organist at Weimar; 1717, orchestral director at Koethen;in 1723 and until his death, Cantor of St. Thomas School at Leipsic, and director of music in the churches of St. Thomas and St. John. He was twice married and had twenty children, of whom ten sons were musicians; he died totally blind, and was buried in the Church of St. John. He was the greatest organist of the 18th century and a famous performer on the clavichord. He was the first to teach the use of the thumb and all the fingers for playing. He wrote the only perfect fugues, and other masterpieces for clavichord and organ. There are hundreds of cantatas, compositions for orchestra, pianoforte and organ. Some of the most familiar are the "Inventions," "Well-Tempered Clavichord" - which introduces Preludes and Fugues in all keys - "French and English Suites," "St. Matthew Passion."

Description:
"The Greatest Composer of Symphony" Born at Bonn, Germany; his father and grandfather were musicians. Beethoven is said to have been a grave, solemn boy. He began to study music when he was five years old, and was made to work very hard and long by his father. In 1787 he improvised a difficult fugue before Mozart, who said, "He will make a noise in the world some day." While still a young man he went to Vienna to live, and princes and the aristocracy made much of him, and gave him constant support. By concert playing, composing and teaching, he earned a comfortable living. In 1789 he began to grow deaf. This affliction and the conduct of a dissipated nephew, whom he very much loved, made him irritable and sometimes rude in his behavior. He never married and lived alone, often without servants. He was passionately fond of nature and often composed while walking. He died in Vienna. A fine player, he also stands highest as a composer. He wrote nine symphonies, many quartets, sonatas, masses, concerts, one opera, and many small pieces including songs

Description:
Peter Illijitch Tschaikowski. Born December 25, 1840, died November 6, 1893. "The great Russian Symphonist." Born at Wotkinsk; he originally intended to become a lawyer, but eventually studied composition at the St. Petersburg Conservatory under Rubinstein; in 1866 he became an instructor of harmony at the newly-founded Moscos Conservatory, a post which he retained until 1877. Through the generosity of a lady admirer, whom he know only by correspondence for some years, he was provided with an income of about $2500 a year, which enabled him to devote himself entirely to composition. his life was passed partly in St. Petersburg, partly in Italy and partly in Switzerland. In 1891 he came to New York for the dedication of the Carnegie Music Hall. His music is extremely characteristic of the Russian temperament, though modified with Teutonic ideas. It possesses much fiery energy and is highly colored in its harmonic basis and strange rhythms. He is at his best in composition for the orchestra, is a strong pessimistic note in almost all his music, was a man of melancholy disposition

Description:
"Apostle of the music of the future" Born in Leipsic, his father a city clerk of police, and an accomplished linguist. The boy was fonder of romance and Shakespeare than of regular tasks. While still young he copied much of Beethoven and knew many of his works by heart. His first position was that of chorus-master at Wurzburg, and director of small opera companies. He tried to bring out his first opera in Paris but failed, and nearly starved there; then he went back to Germany. In 1848 because of revolutionary writings and taking part in a political riot in Dresden he was banished and went to Switzerland. His sentence of exile having been remitted, Ludwig II, King of Bavaria, called him to Munich, but Bayreuth was finally chosen instead for the site of the new "Festival Theatre." He died in Venice, but is buried at Bayreuth. He was composer, poet, and stage manager of all his music-dramas, which were unlike preceding operas. He wrote much about music and other subjects. His most familiar operas are Lohengrin, Tannhauser and Die Meistersinger
