Men of Letters Series 4 The American poet and journalist, was born November 3rd, 1794, at Cummington, Massachusetts. He was for a time at Williams College but chiefly received his education at home. By profession he was a barrister. His beautiful poem "Thanatopsis" was published in the "North American Review" in 1817, immediately brought him fame. Among others of his poems are "The Rivulet," "The West Wind," "The Forest Hymn," "June," and "The Flood of Years." Besides other literary appointments he was at one time editor of the "New York Review". He died on Jun 12th, 1878 from the result of a fall

His parents being well to do, he received a liberal education and graduated form Bowdoin in Brunswick, Maine, at the age of eighteen. In 1836 he became professor of modern languages and literature in Harvard College. Among his varied and beautiful works mention must in made of voices of the Night," "Evangeline," "Hiawatha and his "Ballds," which include "The Wreck of the Hesperus" and "The Village Blacksmith." He died at Cambridge, Massachusetts. March 24th 1882."

Min of Letters Series 11, 2699 George Gorden sixth Lord Byron the poet, was born in Holles Street. Cavendish square, London on 22nd of January, 1788. He was educated at Hatrow and Trinity Colleges, Cambridge. His chief poiems are "Childe Harold," "Don Juan," "the Stage of Corinth" and the Celebrated satire" Rnhlidh Bards and scotch Reviewers." Byron's poetical influence in his own country for a time swept all before it, but it gradually abated its force, and is now almost nonexistent. He died in Greece on 19th April, 1824, his body being brought to England and buried near Newstead."
