Lovett Plant of the Rockland Light and Power Company
Title:
Lovett Plant of the Rockland Light and Power Company
Stony Point New York (NY), Chrome unused

Description:
Serving one of America's fastest growing territories, Rockland Light and Power Company's $25,000,000 electric generating plant, on the Hudson River at Stony Point, can satisfy the electricity requirements of 385,000 people - more than the entire population of Delaware. Constructed in three stages, the 118,000 kilowatt plant embodies two units of 24,000 kilowatt capacity which were completed in 1949 and 1951 respectively, and a third unit just completed, of 70,000 kilowatts. The new unit more than doubles the capacity of the Lovett Plant and was planned some years ago to provide ample electricity for the expected rapid growth in Rockland Light's service area. Operating at a steam pressure of 1850 pounds and temperature of 1050 F. it can generate a kilowatt-hour of electricity from seven-tenths of a pound of coal, which makes it one of the most efficient units of its size in the world. Coil, oil or natural gas can be used at Lovett Plant, the fuel employed at any time depending on its relative cost. Operating at full capacity the plant will consume 300,000 tons of coal per year or 50,000,000 gallons of oil. This represents 5,000 railroad cars of coal or 18 medium tankers of oil. The plant has a coal storage of 80,000 tons and two oil storage tanks with a capacity of 11,000,000 gallons. Cooling this generative giant requires the circulation of 69,500 gallons of Hudson River water a minute or 100,000,000 gallons per day
