Description:
Circleville, Ohio, as it appeared in 1836. Circleville was not only founded on but laid out within and took its name from the circular portion of a large prehistoric earthen enclosure. These ancient works were attributed to a race of men that preceded and were the ancestors of the present race of Indians. By September, 1810, the job of surveying and laying out the town in the pattern of a circle was completed. Some of the streets radiated from the center where stood the brick. octagonal-shaped Court House, while others were circular, paralleling the space about the Court House. while others were circular, paralleling the space about the Court House. About 1838, it was decided that the streets should be changed so that they run at right angles to each other to Square its Circle. Thus, by 1860, this most unique feature had been an incomparable heritage became only a distinguished tradition of "Old Roundtown."
