Description:
Series C. 1.-6. Robert Fulton, the pioneer of steam navigation, was born in Fulton, Lancaster Co., Pa. Nov 14th, 1765. The "Clermont," designed by him was the first steamboat to make a successful trip. She was 133 feet long, 18 feet wide, 9 feet deep and 160 tons measurement. Fulton died in New York City on February 24th, 1815, and is buried in Trinity Churchyard, where in 1901 a granite monument with a bronze medallion was erected by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Frequently accompanying a certain Mr. Gumpf on fishing excursions on the Conestoga, he became tired of pushing the boat about with a pole. This led his mechanical genius to devise a set of paddles, which he operated by hand. The device was a success and so pleased the young inventor that he hid the paddles in the bushes for safety

THE CLERMONT. Fulton's Steamboat. Length, 150 feet; width, 13 feet; draught of water, 2 feet. Launched in the spring of 1807 from the shipyards of Charles Brown on the East River. Left New York at one o'clock August 17th, 1807, arrived at Clermont Manor (110 miles) August 18th, at one o'clock. Left Clermont Manor at 9 A.M. August 19th, arrived at Albany at 5 P.M. With torrents of smoke and flame pouring from her smokestack, and gruesome noises from her crude engines, she was an awesome object to early New Yorkers. A countryman described her as "The devil on his way to Albany in a sawmill."

To commemorate the 300th anniversary of henry Hudson's first trip up the river that bears his name, a memorial bridge is to be erected at Spuyten Duyvil, New York, crossing the Harlem River. It will be of re-enforced concrete, 2870 feet long, 80 feet wide and 270 feet high (above tide-water), with a central span of 725 feet. The upper story is to have a roadway 50 feet wide and two walks for pedestrians, having a width of 15 feet each; four rapid transit tracks will be laid on the lower story. The bridge will cost about $4,000,000 and require nearly four years to build.

Hudson landing from the “Half-Moon”. Henry Hudson, an English navigator in the employ of the Dutch East India Company, while searching for a short passage to China and India, sailed by chance into what is now New York Bay; he started up the river that to-day bears his name, on Sept, 2nd, 1609, in his ship, the “Half-Moon.” This voyage ended about Where Albany now stands, and on Oct, 4th, he set sail on his return journey to Amsterdam. Hudson was eleven days navigating up the river, a distance that is now traversed in as many hours.
