Settled in 1639 by Richard Boothe and others. In 1663, Zachariah, a grandson of Richard, moved northerly on the westerly bank of the Housatonic River and along the former and most favorite Indian GTrail of the Chief Paugasset, about three miles to Putnee, its highest prominence, and which, on account of its natural beauties, has since been called Putney Gardens. Here is obtained an unobstructed view of this romantic river and of Long Island Sound for some forty miles or more, including seven of its lighthouses; and there took up his abode upon the same site and part of the cellar wall of the present Boothe Homestead.
