Description:
Opening with a grand ball in 1889, the Montana Hotel, now the Hotel Marcus Daly, was one of the finer hotels in the northwest. It is estimated that this structure cost Marcus Daly about $300,000. A modern air-conditioned motel was added in 1964 and adjoined the the hotel by a breezeway.

Description:
Color by B. R. Freer 585' 1 1/2" tall, the stack has an outside diameter of 86', inside diameter of 75' 4", with the walls measuring 5' 4" thick at the base. Inside diameter at the top is 60'. 20,491 sacks of cement were used in building the 5000 cubic foot concrete base, with the mortar for bricklaying requiring 42,354 sacks. 2,466,392 various sized large brick-the equivalent of 6,672,214 common house brick-are in the stack. The stack weighs 23,810 tons. Smoke went up the stack for the first time May 5th, 1919
