The southernmost point of the State, Where the Potomac river (right) empties into Chesapeake Bay, was the site of a prison for Confederates captured during the Civil War. Earthen works of the fort remain, and a Confederate cemetery is nearby. Now a state park with 3 miles of sandy beach on bay and river, it is a fine spot for camping, fishing and crabbing.

This view was made a few miles west of Williamsport, Md. Geo. Washington inspired the beginning of the Canal near the end of the 1700's along the Va. Shore of the Potomac River. This was soon abandoned and in 1828 a new company began on the Md. Side of the river. It too 22 years to finish in 1850. The 184-1/2 mile canal cost 2 million dollars. 74 lift locks raised the canal from Great Falls to Cumberland, Md. in the Allegheny Mts. By the time it was completed it was already out dated but operated until 1924. Today it is used by the public as a hiking-camping and horseback riding trail under the direction of the National Park Service.

This bridge was formerly used as the Pennsylvania Railroad Bridge over the Susquehanna River. In 1910, it was taken over by private interests and made into a highway bridge and toll was charged. In 1923 it was purchased by the State of Maryland, and in 1927 was made a toll free bridge.
