Description:
About a mile from the village of Canajoharie is a miniature canyon, the walls of which are 100 feet or more high. Near the lower end of the gorge and close to the village is a wide, very deep pot-hole, worn there by the swirling water, smoothed and finished to almost perfect proportion by pebbles and gravel. The Mohawk Indians called this hole "Can-a-jo-ha-rie" which means "the kettle, or pot, that washes itself." It is from this that the creek and village obtained its Indian name.
