Description:
The exact number of fugitives hidden in this cave is not known, but statements that large numbers of Negroes were ferried over the Missouri river at this point were corroborated by old settlers when this information was obtained in 1901. Nearly always the first trip in the morning of John Boulware's ferry carried a load of stolen slaves.

Beneath this cabin, in the days of the repeal of the Missouri Compromise, the Mayhew family built the large cave used as a station in the famed Underground Railroad to smuggle runaway slaves to the free North. Cabin and cave are open to visitors. Inset shows entrance leading into a creek where slaves escaped during the night.
