Portsmouth was established in 1752, by William Crawford. The city's population today is approximately 50,000. Among the interesting things to see in Portsmouth are the Navy Yard, Marine Barracks, Naval Hospital, confederate monument, Old Court House and Trinity Episcopal Church. During the war between the States the Navy Yard was captured and partly destroyed. Portsmouth also was invaded by Lord Dunmore in 1776 when he bombarded and burned Norfolk.
