The world's most talented performing elephant. Bertha, John Ascuaga's Nugget's own amazing elephant, has been the "biggest" star in the Reno area since 1962. She was born in India in 1945. Now, fully grown, she weighs approximately five tons! Like all the great entertainers who've appeared at the Nugget, Bertha enjoys "star" treatment. She is groomed daily and her skin is frequently smoothed with a coarse sandpaper material. She receives an extensive pedicure every six weeks. Fine dining for Bertha is a balanced diet of oat hay, a variety of vegetables fruit and bread. Bertha lives in her own custom built "Elephant Palace" just west of the Nugget (at 14th Street and Nugget Avenue). Her Home features a private swimming pool and fenced exercise yard. Bertha loves to meet people and eagerly accepts visitors any day of the week, from 10 am. to 2 p.m

Latham's Aeroplane. At first sight Mr. Latham's aeroplane appears similar in construction to that of M. Bleriot's but upon examination it is found to be different in many features. He is an Englishman, and his plucky but abortive effort to be the first to cross the Channel will always be remembered by his countrymen. At Rheims, with his Antoinette" monoplane, Mr. Latham sustained a flight of no less than 96 miles in 2 hours 18 minutes, and was second in the Grand Prix.
