Description:
Previous to 1915 this was a great mound on which grew trees, bushes, etc. In that year the mound was excavated by Dr. J. Walter Fewkes, of the Smithsonian Institution, disclosing this remarkable ruin, which is in the form of the letter "D", with the flat side toward the south. The structure is 131 feet long. The walls are double, they are four feet thick and in places nearly twelve feet high

Description:
City of the Silent Dead in Southwestern Colorado. Mesa Verde (Spanish for Green Table Land) National Park contains the most extensive and best preserved ruins of the prehistoric cliff dwellers. The Cliff Palace, largest and most noted of the ruins, is 300 feet long - contains about 200 rooms - and is situated high on the rim several hundred feet above the bottom of Cliff Canon.

This is the second in size of the many structures in the park, being 200 feet long and having contained 114 rooms. There is a fine spring near by, at the head of the canon, - which probably was an inducement for the ancient inhabitants in choosing this location.
