For three hundred and twenty seven miles not a stop sign traffic light - cross road or street no grade over three percent which instead of climbing over the peaks of the Alleghenies, dives through them in seven well-ventilated, well-illuminated tunnels. Throughout the entire length of the Turnpike Gasoline Service Stations and Restaurants are located on both sides of the roadway at staggered points. The Restaurants are most attractive and are operated by the famous Howard Johnson where good food can be obtained at reasonable prices.

Tunnel, the Turnpike runs straight as a string for long distances through the fertile Cumberland Valley, a stretch for thirteen miles without a curve. It is the longest straight away in Pennsylvania. A view showing Clear Ridge Cut at Everett Pa., 153 Feet deep, the largest and deepest man made cut in the United States, "Little Panama," required the removal of 1,350,000 cubic yards of earth. More than 700,000 pounds of explosives were used in blasting through this ridge.
