Cavalry Scouting

Cavalry Scouting
Divided Back unused

Description:
Series 4 Cavalry has frequently been termed "the eyes of the army," and in this role was considered quite as important as when actively involved in fighting. Now, however, the Aviation Corps does practically all the scouting, and is much better adapted for it in every way. One man in an aeroplane can get the desired information more quickly, more safely, and probably more accurately than a whole troop of cavalry. Since modern trench warfare precludes all opportunity for the effective use of cavalry, and suitable horses are ex[pensive and hard to get, many authorities on military affairs declare that this arm of the service is rapidly passing, and the army of the future will be a horseless one.

Directing the Range for the Mortars
Divided Back unused

Description:
Series 18 At Fort Wright, Fisher's Island, N.Y. No, these men are not trying to figure out the solution to a problem in mathematics, but are engaged in solving a very real problem of modern warfare. To be an officer of artillery requires a comprehensive knowledge of higher mathematics, and range finding for mortars is even harder than for the other types of guns with longer barrels. Because of the peculiar construction of mortars, in order to get any considerable range, it is necessary that they be fired a great angle of elevation. Note the telephones which enable the officers to give instructions to their men, who are doing the actual work of aiming and loading the mortars.

Description:
Series 22 This type of light field artillery was used so successfully in Europe to fire shrapnel and high explosive shells. The shield of armor plate which protects the men are all tested with a regulation rifle bullet shot at 100 yards before they are placed on the gun. The gun is operated by five men, each of whom has special duties. The shell is taken from the caisson or ammunition chest, which is at the left of the gun, the fuses set and the shell put into the gun and the breach closed ready for firing. With an efficient gun crew, twenty of these shots can be fired in a minute

Description:
Series 6 The Engineers of the United States army saw a lot of active service during the European war, and they are the most efficient body of Engineers in the world. This is one of the most important branches of the service, and frequently the most dangerous. The Engineers are often as much as a day's march ahead of the main body of troops, clearing roads, preparing camp sites and building bridges. A pontoon bridge similar to that shown here can be constructed in a few hours, and serves the need of the hour as well as the most elaborate bridge built at great expense of time and money

Long service in India was followed by many years' active service in the Peninsula, under Wellington, and it won additional honours at Quatre Bras and Waterloo. Further fighting followed in South Africa, the Crimea, and India, and it was also in Egypt in 1882 and South Africa in 1899, its high reputation being fully maintained during the Continental War by many new battalions
