Schoenbrunn State Memorial New Philadelphia, Ohio. Excerpt from Zeisberger's Diary - September 19, 1772, "Finished the church this evening; held the first service." October 24, 1773, "Second church was dedicated." The church was rebuilt in 1928 and dedicated on October 21, 1928. Restoration of village was begun by the Ohio State Archaeological and Historical Society in 1927.

Description:
Schoenbrunn, ""Beautiful Spring,"" the first organized town in Ohio, was settled on May 3, 1772, by David Zeisberger, a Moravian Missionary, and a small company of Christian Indians. Here were established the first Protestant Church and School north and west of the Ohio River. Here, also, was adopted a code of laws which might be termed, ""Ohio's First Civil Code."" Schoenbrunn attained at its height, a population of 414 inhabitants. In the year 1777 these peaceful folk were driven out by a band of warring Munsees (Monseys) and their town completely destroyed. Restoration of the village was begun by the State of Ohio. in 1927

Ohio's first town. The cabin in which John Schebosch lived was the first structure in the village to be reconstructed. It was completed in June-July 1927. Schebosch, whose real name was John Bull, joined the Moravian Church in 1742, and devoted his life to service in the Indian Mission. The Village was reconstructed under the supervision of The Ohio State Archaeological and Historical Society, and is administered as a State Memorial
