The Royal Hula-hula dancing girls were a feature of olden days in Hawaii. The hula-hula is acting out by gestures and movements the ideas expressed by the song which accompany them. The time is marked by striking on gourds of bokee and in some instances these dancers are in honor of the Gods or chief as the alaapa-apa. The professional hula dancers are devotees of the Goddess Laka. The dancers are generally women, though children are sometimes engaged in the less objectionable dances and men act as buffoons between the acts.

The Royal Hula-hula dancing girls were a feature of olden days in Hawaii. The Hula-hula is acting out by gestures and movements the ideas expressed by the songs which accompany them. The time is marked by striking on gourds or bokeo and in some instances these dancers are in honor of the Gods or Chiefs as slaapa-apa. The professional hula dancers are devotees of Goddess Laka. The dancers are generally women though children sometimes are engaged in the less objectionable dances and act as buffoons between the acts.

This house was the first frame house erected in Hawaii, and is situated on King Street near the palace. It was first occupied by Father Cooke who taught within its precincts the great chiefs and kings of Hawaii, and it is still in a fine state of preservation and has many interesting relics within its doors. The entire house was brought around Cape Horn in a sailing vessel with the early missionaries about 1830.

The most popular of Hawaiian pastimes is surf swimming or heenalu. In this sport the swimmers use a light board made of koa or wiliwill. With these they swim out to sea, diving under the rollers which they meet, until they reach the outher line of breakers; then, lying flat on their boards, they balance themselves upon the forward slope of the highest breaker, and ride with the speed of a race horse toward the shore. Surf board swimming can be seen at Waikiki near Honolulu.

The Hawaiian canoes are hollowed out of a single tree having strips of hard wood sewed on the upper edge of the canoe on each side, closing over the top at both stem and stern. The canoes are steadied by an outrigger or Ama, a slender log of light wood parallel to the canoe and fastened to it by crude cross-pieces or Iako. Canoe surf riding is unsurpassed in the Hawaiian Islands. Tourists are taken in these surf riding canoes at Waikiki near Honolulu.
