Spared the worst of the bombing of 1940-43, The Barbican still has narrow, winding streets paved with cobbles. The area was a sixteenth century extension of the old town centre, growing up as a result of the increased trade created by the wars with Spain and the exploration of the New World. In the Quay-area may be found plaques and memorials to commemorate many famous voyages, including the departure of the Pilgrim Fathers and the return of the Tolpuddle Martyrs
