The famous Hotel was erected by the Manhattan Beach Company in the spring of 1880, and opened during the summer of the same year. It is a unique and very imposing structure, nearly 500 feet long, six and seven stories high, and ornamented with circular towers. It contains about 500 sleeping rooms, prettily furnished, and is noted for its exclusiveness and unsurpassed cuisine.

Description:
California-Giant Trees - This picture illustrates how the log lengths, into which a big tree is cut so it can be taken to the mill, are conveyed on special railroad trucks. The log shown in this picture, when cut up, made more than 40,000 shingles! The loading of these logs on to the railroad trucks is, in itself, a delicate and dangerous task. By means of chains the log is drawn up an incline pathway formed of dressed logs, and finally landed in place, when it is secured to the trucks.

James A. Garfield, twentieth President of the United States, was born in Orange Township, Cuyahoga Co., Ohio, Nov. 30th, 1831. He was graduated from Williams College in 1856. In 1858 he married Lucretia Randolph. Monitor was their home except when his official duties called him elsewhere. On July 3rd, 1881, he was shot in the Baltimore and Potomac Railway Depot at Washington by Charles Gulteau. He lingered until Sept. 19th, when he died at Eiberon, NJ, where he had been removed on Sept. 6th. Garfield's remains rest in a beautiful Monument in Lake View Cemetery, Cleveland.

John Adams, second President of the United States, was born Oct. 30th, 1735, in that part of the town of Braintree, Mass., which is now called Quincy. He was graduated from Harvard in 1753, and on Oct. 26th, 1764, married Abigail Smith, a lady of culture and social distinction. After a brilliant political career, Mr. Adams passed a quarter of a century at his home in Quincy in peaceful, happy seclusion, devoting himself to literary work. He died in his 91st year, on July 4th, 1826 - the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. He lived long enough to see his son John Quincy become President. Mrs. Adams died in 1818

John Quincy Adams, sixth President of the United States, was born in Quincy, Norfolk Co., Mass., July 11th 1767. He was graduated from Harvard in 1787. On July 26th, 1797, he married Louise Catherine Johnson. Adams was a devoted husband and father, and their home life was one of uninterrupted happiness. Mr. Adams died of paralysis in Washington on Feb. 2nd, 1848. His wife then returned to the Quincy home, and her death occurred on May 14th, 1852. Both are buried in Quincy.

James K. Polk, eleventh President of the United States, was born in Pineville, Mecklenberg Co., N. C. on Nov. 2d, 1795. He was graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1818, and in 1924 was married to Sarah Childress. Before the expiration of his term of office (1845-49), he purchased a hiuse in Nashville, and here he died on June 15th, 1849. His remains are buried beneath a temple erected on the grounds., Mrs. Polk continued to live there until her death in 1891.

Franklin Pierce, fourteenth President of the United States was born at Hillsboro, N.H. on Nov. 23rd, 1804. He was graduated from Bowdoin College in 1824, and in 1834 married Jane Means Appleton.They both preferred the quiet of their New England life to the fashionable life at Washington, and were glad when they could return to Hillsboro at the end of Pierce's term of office in 1857. Later they moved to Concord, where they passed the remainder of their days in comfort and ease. Pierce died on Oct. 8th, 1869, six years after the death of his wife.

At the expiration of his second term, Cleveland with his wife and family retired to their Princeton home - "Westland" - passing the greater part of each year there in a quiet, unostentatious life of comfort and ease. Cleveland died there on June 24th, 1908

Their home is "Sagamore Hill" which commands a view of Long Island Sound and the Connecticut shore beyond, the estate embracing about 100 acres. The interior of the house is adorned with many souvenirs and trophies of Roosevelt's skill in hunting.

North Bend - Home of William Henry Harrison. William Henry Harrison, ninth President of the United States, was born in Berkclay, Charles City Co., Va., Feb. 9th, 1773. He was graduated from Hampden-Sidney College in 1790, studied medicine, then entered the army in 1791 as ensign, and rose rapidly in rank. On Nov. 22nd, 1795, he married Anna Symmes. Harrison was inaugurated in 1841. and served as President exactly one month, dying of pleurisy April 4th, 1841. He was the first Chief Magistrate to die in office. His wife was at their home in North Bend, Ohio, at the time of his death, and his remains were later removed there from Washington. Mrs. Harrison died in 1864.

In 1848, he purchased a small estate of twenty-two acres, known as "Wheatland." The house, a substantial brick mansion, was his home when not occupying an official residence in Washington or London. He died here on June 1st, 1868.

He entered the College William and Mary at the age of 17, was graduated, studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1767. On Jan 1st, 1772, he married Mrs. Martha Skelton, a widow of much grace and charm, and took her to his new home, "Monticello." His estate included 40,000 acres and 135 slaves. After 44 years of public service, Jefferson retired to private life in 1809, and died at "Monticello" on July 4th, 1826. His wife died in 1782.

Abraham Lincoln, sixteenth President of the United States, was born near Hodgeville, Larue County, Kentucky, February 12th, 1809. He did not attend college. In 1836 he moved to Springfield and practiced Law. In 1842 he married Mary Todd. Lincoln served but a little more than a month of a second term as President when he was assassinated while at Ford's Theatre, Washington, on April 14th, 1865, by John Wilkes Booth. He expired on the following morning. He was buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Ill. Mrs. Lincoln died in 1881.

As Vice-President, he succeeded to the Presidency by the death of Garfield on Sept. 19th, 1881. He died suddenly at his New York residence on Nov. 18th, 1886, having outlived his wife six years.

Hayes died in Fremont, his home for many years, on Jan 17th, 1893, his widow surviving him six years.

Madison died here on June 28th, 1836, his widow surviving him thirteen years

John Tyler became the tenth President of the United States on April 6th, 1841, two days after the death of his predecessor, William Henry Harrison. He was born in Greenway, Charles City Co., Va. March with 1790, and was graduated from William and Mary College in 1807. In 1811 he was married to Letitia Christian. Mrs. Tyler died at the White House in September 1842. In June, 1944, Tyler married Julia Gardner. At the expiration of his term of office, he retired to Sherwood Forest, where he indulged in his scholarly tastes and dispensed agreeable hospitality. He died at his home on Jan. 17th, 1862, his wife surviving him 37 years.

He was Vice President when Lincoln was assassinated, and succeedd to his unexpired term. Johnson died on July 31st, 1875, near Carter's Station, Tenn., and was buried near his home in Greenville, Tenn. His wife survived him one year.

Mount Vernon-Home of George Washington. George Washington, first president of the United States, was born Feb. 2nd. 1732, on the banks of the Potomac, Virginia. Mount Vernon was built by his half-brother Laurence, who died in 1752, when George went to Mount Vernon to live. The house contains about twenty rooms; in the dining room (on the right) is the Carrara marble mantel sent to George Washington from Italy. On Jan. 6th 1759, Washington married Mrs. Martha Curtis, a young widow. he died of pneumonia on Dec. 14th, 1779, his wife surviving him three years.

Andrew Jackson, the seventh President of the United States, and the founder of the Democratic Party, was born March 15th, 1767, in the Washaw Settlement, Union Co., on the border between North and South Carolina. He married Mrs. Rachel Donelson Roberts in 1794. After nearly 40 years of happy wedlock, Mr.s Jackson died at The Hermitage on Dec. 2nd, 1828. Jackson continued to live there until his death on June 6th, 1845.
