This shrine is the brainchild of sports writer Germane Swanson and was financed with funds contributed by fans of the great game across the nation. It is located in the Canton Park System on 14 wooded acres in the N.W. section of the city next to Canton Expressway (Rt. 77). It is a two building complex which features a 52 foot dome - a stylized architectural impression of a football. The dramatic mural sculptured in copper over the entrance was hand-hammered by Dale Drulis and weighs over 800 lbs. While Latrobe, Pa. is considered the real home of Professional Football. Canton, Ohio is where the National Football League was founded in 1920. In addition, the first football championships were decided here. It is also where Jim Thorpe had first stirred national interest in the great game.

Description:
The mascots have been created to continue to tell the story of the Salt Lake Games and are based on our culture. The mascot story begins with our Native American ancestry long ago. The inspiration was the 2000 year old etchings found in the desert canyon walls. Our first known artists created the marks and explained the stories behind them in Native American legends and myths. These legends echo the Olympic Motto of "Citius, Altius, Fortuis" (Swifter, higher, stronger). The hare was swifter; the coyote reached higher; the bear was stronger. The Salt Lake 2002 Mascots honor the history of the games and the culture of the land.

This old before-the-war mansion, standing among some of the finest trees in the Sand Hills, is interesting as being the first home built in Southern Pines - about 1835. Sherman's Raiders carried off its stock and slaves, and it suffered more or less from both armies. It is visited by many tourists, who always find a cordial welcome.

Hugh R. Loudon, well known amateur golfer of Florida, plays a perfect iron shot to the third green, which is 150 yards, well trapped and bunkered, during a match with Orville W. Chapin, professional of Minneapolis. Tom C. Hobson, pro, Holly Hill Country Club and Jim Powers, assistant pro. Mr. London, paired with Mr. Chapin, won the match by one up. The photo shows Mr. Loudon, with his irons suspended in mid-air, immediately after the ball left the tee.
