Pennsylvania 1361

Description:
The first K4s was built in the railroad's Juniata Shops, Altoona, Pa, in 1914 and numbered 1737. The 4-6-2 underwent exhaustive testing both on the road and in the shop's test plant. Not a super-power machine, the Pacific was a straight forward design, hand fired with screw reverse but superheated. Originally the locomotive was equipped with a square cased headlight and a wooden pilot. After three years, in 1917, Juniata Shops started turning out more of these tough steeds. By the late 1920s the last of 425 class K4s Pacific steam locomotives were built. K4s 1361 was famous as it was the Pacific that was placed on Horseshoe Curve for exhibition. Dedication was on June 8, 1957. After years of display the locomotive was removed to Conrail's shops for restoration. Its first trip was on April 12, 1987, to Bellefonte, Pa during the weekend of August 27 and 28, 1999. 1361 powered excursions for the York Chamber of Commerce in observation of 150 years of rail service. The Pacific is seen here by the York Pa. station on August 28, 1888.

Description:
The brochure said a double run-by with the Class A on a coal train and the Class 3 on the excursion passenger train. One would wonder how this would all come about. It was marvelous, in fact it was stupendous! There hasn't been a steam display such as this in decades. The class A, 1218, was on a coal train of hopper cars just long enough so when they went by, the caboose and observation were almost side by side. This spectacular event took place during the National Railway Historical Society Convention in Roanoke, Va., specifically on Saturday August 1, 1987 during the excursion to Radford, VA. Both locomotives were built in the railroad's shops in Roanoke, the 1218 in 1943 and the 611 in 1950.

Title:
Union Pacific 4017
Harriman Wyoming (WY), Jumbo/Large Format

Description:
Big Boy, the world's largest steam locomotive was operated by the Union Pacific Railroad and was noted for its service over Sherman Hill in Wyoming. A truly modern steam locomotive, they survived the diesel invasion until July 21, 1959 when Big Boy 4015 was made the last regular steam locomotive run over Sherman Hill. In this view, 4-8-8-4 No. 4017 has a drag freight in tow west of Harriman, Wyo., October 6, 1958. The articulated 4-8-8-4 wheel arrangement allowed the front set of drivers to move sideways to negotiate normal track curves. Weighing in at 1.2 million pounds and exerting a tractive effort of 135,375 pounds, these giant locomotives were designed to move the freight at speeds up to 80 miles mils per hour. A total of 25 Big Boys were turned out by the American Locomotive Co., in Schenectady, NY from the time No. 4000 deadheaded west on the New York Central in September 1941 until the last group of five, 4020-4024, were delivered to the Union Pacific in November 1944.

A pair of Electro-Motive FL9s power the train as usual but today, August 19, 1986, one of the four units painted in the New Haven colors does the honors up front. The General Motor's Electro-Motive model FL9 was a unique locomotive. Designed to operate as a straight electric locomotive on New York Central's third rail to Grand Central Terminal, the locomotive has a diesel engine to power the traction motors through a generator for normal operation. The New Haven received two groups of thirty locomotives each. The first group delivered from October 1956 to November 1957 had 1750 hp and the second group, delivered June 1960 to November 1960, had 1800 hp. Although, the FL9s are presently numbered in the 2000 series, the numbers do not match the original 2000 series numbers for each locomotive as delivered to the New Haven.

Description:
It was during the post war years of 1945-47 that the Reading Co. placed thirty of these 4-8-4 Northern type steam locomotives in service. A middle-weight 4-8-4 at over 220 tons engine weight, these locomotives were rebuilt and stretched from 76 foot class I-10 consolidations to 110 foot Northern. The T-1 has 70 inch drivers, a boiler pressure of 240 pounds and a total tractive effort with booster cut in of 79,100 pounds. The tender holds 26 tons of coal and 19,000 gallons of water. No. 2102 participated in the original Reading co. Iron Horse Rambles in the early 1960s along with No. 2100. No. 2102 also had the distinction of being the star steam motive power for the Delaware & hudson's Sesquicentennial in 1973 as No. 302. In September 1989, the Reading Company Technical & Historical Society operated a series of four Rambles with 2102. Here, the T-1 is seen at the former Reading Co. shops in Reading, Pa. on September 21, 1985. It should also be noted, that the year the first T-1, No. 2100, was placed in service in 1945, the Reading Shops celebrated its 100th anniversary of locomotive building. More than 600 new locomotives were erected here and many others rebuilt including the thirty T-1s and 220 ton 2-10-2s.

Description:
It could be 1910 or 1920 or even 1930 but its 1985. Two steam locomotives, built in the first decade of the twentieth century, cross the famous Rockville Bridge and the Susquehanna River. The bridge, which connects Rockville and Marysville, is a few miles up-stream from Harrisburg, Pa. The stone arch Rockville Bridge was built in 1902 and replaced an earlier structure of steel on stone piers. Occasion for this crossing is the National Railway Historical Society's Convention Special on August 23, 1985. Both locomotives, Atlantic 7002 and American 1223, were built by the railroad's Juniata Shops. The former Pennsylvania Railroad steam locomotives are leased by the Strasburg Rail Road from the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.

Description:
The beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway has many scenic wonders to its credit but on Labor Day 1982 an additional sight was added to the list for the day as Norfolk & Western steam locomotive 611 passed under the parkway bridge east of Vinton, Va. The big class J locomotive and excursion train was enroute to Alexandria fro Roanoke with the Centennial Limited - The Tennesseean on its second outing since return to service. Regular active service ended in October 1959 after a short nine years. After three years of storage, the 611 was donated to the City of Roanoke and displayed in the new transportation museum. Then, after almost 20 years a a static display, the 4-8-4 was removed for inspection and overhaul to power excursions in 1982. A set of matching cars were rebuilt and furnished by the Norfolk & Western and the Roanoke Chapter, National Railway Historical Society to add the final touch to this 1950s passenger train.

Description:
Five diesel locomotives cross under the caboose of its own train after they traveled around the Tehachapi Loop at Walong, California, October 20, 1974. The Southern Pacific built the line eastward from Caliente up into the mountains on a 2.52 per cent ruling grade in 1875 and 1876. The 27 mile line through Tehachapi Pass, constructed under engineer William Hood, included a horseshoe curve at Caliente's Neck and a 3795-foot loop crossing over itself to gain 78 feet in elevation. This loop at Walong siding, the Tehachapi Loop, became world famous and is the outstanding feature of the hill. In 1899, the Sante Fe acquired rights to use the line resulting in a parade of trains moving up and down the hill since the start of the 20th century. Motive power was always big and in the second generation diesel era, the typical big power in General Motors EMD model SD45-2 locomotives such as the 5705 leading the train pictured.

Description:
At 8:30 in the morning, Saturday, September 13, 1980. Greenbrier 614 started a fall series of excursions over the Chessie System departing Baltimore, MD for a round trip to Harpers Ferry via the Ptapsco Valley. Twenty trips were made, the last a round trip from Cincinnati, Ohio. The big 4-8-4, and it was big too, 112 feet 3 inches coupler to coupler, was capable of handling the train as this scene near Brunswic, MD on September 19, 1980 illustrates. 614 was built by Lima and delivered to the Chesapeake & Ohio in the summer of 1948 as one of a group of five class J3-a locomotives numbered 610-614. Designed for passenger service, the Greenbrier also saw duty in freight service, especially after the arrival of the E8 diesel. After a relatively short active life of only eight years, the 614, now the 611, was withdrawn from service. Escaping the scrapper's torch, it was donated to hte Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum in 1977 where it rested until pulled out for restoration and excursion service by Ross Rowland's Steam Locomotive Corporation of America, in October of 1979. With the coming of CSX, the Chessie Family Lines merger, a series of winter excursions in Florida are planned for February and March 1981.

Electro Motive built F9 covered wagons 818,815 and 810 await the next call to duty at Essex, Montana on July 2, 1979. The quartet of first generation diesel-electrics are assigned to pusher service. In 1979, the largest fleet of F Units was owned and operated by the Burlington Northern with 62 assigned to the Pacific Northwest, mainly in the State of Washington. The fleet is of Great Northern and Northern Pacific origin and is made up of four models F3's, F7's, one FP7 and F9's. Assignments are varied as they see service in drag freights, local service, helper service as mentioned and even hotshots. Continued use, rather than retirement, seems likely as the BN is rebuilding these F Units in 1979 due to the increasing need of motive power on the road.

Pacific, class K4, No. 1361 waits at South Amboy, N3 for a train to the Jersey shore, August 4, 1954. Trains arrived from Penn Station, New York City with GGI electric locomotives to this point where the switch to steam was made. The switch is still made at this station, but now its from electric to diesel power. After being retired from service, 1361 was placed on display along the mainline at Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pa. in 1957. These pacific lomotives were the mainstay of fast passenger service for years before the last of the fleet spent their final years on the New York & Long Branch in commuter service. In September 1985, the Pacific was removed from the Curve and placed in the Railroaders Memorial Museum in Altoona before being taken to the Conrail Shops for overhaul. After thirty years, 1361 again turned a wheel under its own power on April 11, 1987 at 8:57 pm.
