"Monticello" - Home of Thomas Jefferson. Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States, was born in Shadwell, Albemarie County, Virginia April 2nd, 1743. He entered the College William and Mary at the age of 17, was graduated, studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1767. On Jan 1st, 1772, he married Mrs. Martha Skelton, a widow of much grace and charm, and took her to his new home, "Monticello." His estate included 40,000 acres and 135 slaves. After 44 years of public service, Jefferson retired to private life in 1809, and died at "Monticello" on July 4th, 1826. His wife died in 1782.

James Madison, fourth President of the United States, was born at Port Conway, Va., March 16th, 1751. He was graduated from Princeton in 1772. In September, 1794, he married a beautiful young widow, Mrs. Dorothy Payne Todd. About the time of his marriage, he built his home at Montpelier--a large, commodious mansion, designed more for comfort and hospitality than display; one wing was exclusively appropriated to his mother. Madison died here on June 28th, 1836, his widow surviving him thirteen years

John Tyler became the tenth President of the United States on April 6th, 1841, two days after the death of his predecessor, William Henry Harrison. He was born in Greenway, Charles City Co., Va. March with 1790, and was graduated from William and Mary College in 1807. In 1811 he was married to Letitia Christian. Mrs. Tyler died at the White House in September 1842. In June, 1944, Tyler married Julia Gardner. At the expiration of his term of office, he retired to Sherwood Forest, where he indulged in his scholarly tastes and dispensed agreeable hospitality. He died at his home on Jan. 17th, 1862, his wife surviving him 37 years.

Mount Vernon was built by his half-brother Laurence, who died in 1752, when George went to Mount Vernon to live. The house contains about twenty rooms; in the dining room (on the right) is the Carrara marble mantel sent to George Washington from Italy. On Jan. 6th 1759, Washington married Mrs. Martha Curtis, a young widow. he died of pneumonia on Dec. 14th, 1779, his wife surviving him three years.

Double-headed steam locomotives make a beautiful sight! Especially if they are two big machines such as the two Norfolk & Western locomotives pictured here tackling the grade east of Roanoke, Va. Northern 611 and Articulated 1218 are going to pass under the Blue Ridge Parkway as they travel east to Lynchburg with the National Railway Historical Society's Outbound Convention Special on Sunday, August 2, 1987. These two locomotives, built in the railroad's shops in Roanoke, are fine examples of modern steam locomotive technology. The 611, a 4-8-4, was built in 1950, just prior to dieselization by US railroads and the 1218, a 2-6-6-8, a war baby in 1943.

The United States Naval Radio Station at Radio, Virginia - Situated at the southwestern end of the Fort Myer Military Reservation opposite Washington, DC. Built by the United States Navy Department (Bureau of Steam Engineering). Land ceded to the Navy Department by the War Department. Rated power of station 100 kilowatts. Towers, one 600 feet high 150 feet square at the base, two 450 feet high 120 feet square at the base, located at angles of an isosceles triangle, large tower at the apex, base of triangle 350 feet between centers of towers, perpendicular to base 350 feet. Normal range: day 2000 miles, night 3000 miles. Cost about $250,000.
