Replica of First Rutledge & Cameron Mill
New Salem Illinois (IL), Linen unused

Description:
As early as 1828, we are told, two men, John Cameron and his uncle, James Rutledge, pushing forward to what was nearly the northernmost limit of civilization, established a mill that was both a grist and a saw mill upon the Sangamon at this point. As frequently happened, the mill served as a nucleus 'round which a town should be established and three years later there was added to the cabins of the two millers a blacksmith shop, two stores, and several log dwellings. A church which served as a school house also stood on an adjoining hill. The site of New Salem was laid out in 1828. In 1836, it is said to have had twenty houses and one hundred inhabitants. "How it vanished," one writer observes, "like a mist in the morning, to what distant place its inhabitants dispersed, and what became of the abodes they left behind, shall be questions for the local historian." One of these inhabitants, only twenty-eight years afterward, became an honored occupant of the White House.

Mill Race Inn
Geneva Illinois (IL), Continental Chrome unused

Description:
A Country Inn on the River's Edge, Where the Fox River flows under the bridge. Built in 1842, our thick-walled Stone Room was the Village Blacksmith Shop of the settlement called Herrington's Ford, shortly to become Geneva. Across the road the Bennett Mill was built to grind the farmers' grain while they had their horses shod and wagons mended. The mill race is that part of the river diverted to turn the mill-wheel to provide power for milling. So our Inn was named when the old building became the present Mill Race Inn almost 50 years ago and the mill race was still fast-flowing between us and Island Park. Fires still burn in the old blacksmith shop, providing our famous traditional Midwestern fare and refreshment served with pride and graciousness by our family since 1946. and on the river's edge our screened Gazebo and open decks provide serenity where you can lift your spirits.
