CANOE First Day of Issue: May 25, 1991 First Issue Location: Secaucus, New Jersey The canoe is an ancient method of transportation, born when man discovered the efficacy of using a log to carry himself across a lake or river. Through experimentation he learned to hollow and shape the log with tools to make it more seaworthy. As civilizations evolved, their peoples constructed more sophisticated crafts to accommodate their changing lifestyles. The North American Indians developed sleeker, more efficient models for use on sapling frames and caulking the finished products with pitch. These canoes were perfectly suited to a nomadic existence of hunting and fishing — buoyant and strong enough to carry passengers or cargo, yet easy to repair and portage over rough terrain. European explorers adopted this unique mode of travel for investigation of the North American interior, establishing thriving fur trades and carving the territory into European colonies. The canoe opened the North American continent to exploration and earned an honored place in its history.
