Pennsylvania's delegation to the 1787 convention was
pivotal in the drafting and ratification of the Constitution.
George Clymer played the role of conciliator when he
served on the Grand Committee. Thomas FitzSimons
was a respected banker whose calm demeanor and
advice was sought out by the Convention. Dr. Benjamin
Franklin, although advanced in years, provided stability
and historical insight during the most heated debates.
Jared Ingersoll possessed both a keen legal mind and
extraordinary eloquence. Thomas Mifflin, Pennsyl-
vania's leading Revolutionary War General, served as
the Speaker of the Assembly under Franklin. Gouverneur
Morris, an accomplished orator and writer, provided the
Constitution's finished “style and arrangement." Robert
Morris, “The Financier," was a close friend of General
Washington; his influence among large state delegates
was considerable. James Wilson along with James Madi-
son of Virginia, was responsible for a large part of the
Constitution's form and substance.
