For centuries public hospitals have been in existence
throughout the world. In the early 1500s, hospitals were
founded in the Western Hemisphere, while the first
hospital in the United States was built in 1658 in New
Amsterdam, now Nev: York City. Throughout the late
1800s and early 1900s, important medical discoveries
improved and advanced hospital care drastically, and
during the 1940s, hospitals became increasingly over-
crowded. To help deal with the problem of over-crowd-
ing, Congress passed the Hill-Burton Act in 1946. This
act authorized government grants to help the states pay
the cost of building new hospitals, while enlarging and
modernizing the existing ones. Public Hospitals today
have employed numerous advanced scientific and
technological devices that have saved the lives of count-
less individuals who would have otherwise perished.
The stamp on this Maximum Card was issued in honor
of the outstanding work provided by the thousands of
Public Hospitals throughout the United States.
