One of the greatest naval officers America has ever
known, Chester Nimitz was the commander in chief of
the United States Pacific Fleet during World War II. After
the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, Nimitz
took command over the crippled American fleet.
Through his firm determination and confidence, the
American fleet was once again rebuilt into the mightiest
Navy in the world. The Admiral's calm confidence and
insistence on a well-prepared Navy led the American
fleet to many victories in the Pacific. Performing bril-
liantly at the Battle of Midway, Nimitz directed combined
battles in the Marianas, Palaus, the Philippines, Two
Jima, and Okinawa. His bold victories finally forced the
Japanese to surrender on September 2, 1945, aboard
Nimitz's own flagship Missouri. After the War, Chester
Nimitz went on to become chief of Naval opera-
tions ... and later served as a mediator for the United
Nations. The stamp featured on this Maximum Card
honors the 100th anniversary of his birth.
