This view was taken when the Cruiser-Destroyer Force At-
lantic Fleet was based here. Their departure in 1974 for
southern ports caused a severe shock to the Newport and
Rhode Island economy. Parts of the piers are now used
commercially, and the Navy has started to base some mis-
sile cruisers here again.
