These buildings house the headquarters staff of this
nationwide organization founded in 1857 and char-
tered by Congress in 1906. The N.E.A. is dedicated to
the upbuilding of democratic civilization and is sup-
ported by the loyal cooperation of the teachers of
the United States. Its purpose is to advance the in-
terests of the teaching profession, promote the wel-
fare of children, and foster the education of all the
people.
